It’s not exactly news to anyone that the notion of femininity has been used as both an ideal and as a pejorative for generations. As an ideal, it’s forced on people born in female bodies from the time they enter the world, insisting on frailty, silence, and obedience in return protection. On the flip-side, it’s used as an insult – usually to men – with a guarantee of both verbal and physical abuse as a result.
